PTA – Purified Terephtalic Acid

PTA

Purified Terephtalic Acid

Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) is an organic compound with formula C6H4(CO2H)2. It is a white solid, known as commodity chemical, and it is used principally as a precursor to the polyester PET which is useful in process of making clothing and plastic bottles. It has been estimated that several million tonnes of it are produced annually.

Some of the main applications:

Polyester fibres, which are based on PTA, are able to provide easy fabric care, alone as well as in blends with natural and other synthetic fibres. Moreover, polyester films are universally used not only in audio and video recording tapes and data storage tapes but also photographic films, labels and other sheet material requiring dimensional stability as well as toughness.

Terephthalic acid is used:

  • in paint as a carrier
  • as a raw material to produce terephthalate plasticizers such as dioctyl terephthalate and dibutyl terephthalate
  • in the pharmaceutical industry as a raw material for certain drugs
  • the acid based on polyesters and polyamides are also used in hot melt adhesives

What is more, PTA is a significant raw material for lower molecular weight saturated polyesters for powder and water-soluble coatings. It is also known to have been popularized as a component for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks in the research laboratory.

Although the analgesic drug oxycodone sometimes comes as a terephthalate salt, the more usual salt of oxycodone is the hydrochloride. In pharmacological terms, one milligram of terephthalas oxycodonae is estimated to be equivalent to 1.13 mg of hydrochloridum oxycodonae.
